Golsa Shafa - Executive Director

Golsa Shafa is a medical student at U of T, who loves to share her passion in filmmaking with people of diverse backgrounds. She founded a movie therapy club at U of T that encourages the audience to take advantage of the therapeutic benefits of films through discussions and self-reflection exercises. She has worked alongside filmmakers (including our Board Directors) and helped organize artistic and cultural events. Last year, she was a volunteer at TNW and this year as the Executive Director she hopes to bring a unique experience to Toronto with her amazing team.

Julia Batista - Creative Director

Julia Batista is a creative producer based in Toronto. Her films focus on documentary work, Virtual Reality filmmaking and fictions on marginalized stories; she is primarily a film producer. She also produces creative content for Ryerson’s Urban Farm. Julia is currently a student in Ryerson University’s BFA Film Studies program, specializing in producing and VR. In addition, she is a 35mm photographer whose work focuses on travel series and emotional portraiture:

Sina Dolati - Board Liason

Sina Dolati is an Iranian-Canadian film, music video, commercial & VR director, and a founding member of the Toronto New Wave festival in 2017. After acquiring an immersive media-focused MA from Ryerson University, he worked on introducing interactive media to TNW 2018 and he's excited for the future of the festival. Sina's short film "Terminal Love" is currently making rounds in festivals.

Natalie O’Neill - Festival Director

Natalie O’Neill is a film producer based in Toronto. Currently studying film production and curatorial practices at Ryerson University, her coursework has allowed for her to explore her interests in both producing and arts administration. Natalie aims to help bring diverse and challenging narratives to attention through her producing and curatorial work.

Sofie Mikhaylova - Technical Director

Sofie Mikhaylova, also known as Sonja, is a DJ, electronic musician and live hardware synth artist, music writer and editor, and creator of independent record label Biblioteka Records. Sofie graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelor of Journalism in 2015. Since then, she has written about music and pop culture for numerous publications, including Vice, Thump, Noisey, Paste Magazine, A.Side, Double Dot Magazine, Vinyl Me, Please, Mixmag, and more. She hosts parties and other events around Toronto, and has spoken on electronic music at the 2018 Make Change Conference. She is the current editor of Dive Music Magazine’s Toronto issue and a 2019 Polaris Prize juror.

Anthony Garber - Head Programmer

Anthony Garber is a business and legal professional focused on the production and financing of original digital content at CBC. Through his work with emerging filmmakers and social creators, Anthony is driven to fostering the development of the next generation of Canadian talent. Following law school, Anthony volunteered at the Ontario Justice Education Network and for Artscape. He's worked for various top law firms in Toronto before settling on entertainment law and finding his niche at CBC.

Miriam Arbus - VR & Interactive Media Programmer

Miriam Arbus is an independent arts curator and organiser, who collaborates on projects that examine our evolving relationships with(in) new digital and technological developments. With methods dedicated to speculative and empathetic considerations, Arbus is always seeking (new) perspectives, expressions and dimensions. Arbus is a project manager and researcher for

Elena Andreev - Film Programmer

Elena Andreev is a business and film student at the University of Toronto. This is her second year as a Film Programmer on the team and she was previously on the programming committee for TIFF Next Wave. Elena is passionate about shining a light on unique and diverse stories from emerging filmmakers.

Steven Griffin - Film Programmer

Steven Griffin is a freelance director working in Toronto. After graduating from Queen's University, he has gone on to direct a variety of commercials, music videos, theatre works and short films. Recently, his short film Spike was was selected for the 2019 Indie Vision Film Festival and his first feature is currently in pre-production. New to the team this year, Steven hopes to bring his knowledge of film and directoral experience to ensure that the selected films this year truly showcase Toronto and the world's strongest emerging voices.

Rachel Chen - Music Programmer

Rachel Chen is a freelance journalist based in Toronto by way of Dallas, Texas. Lately, she works primarily with Chatelaine—but you can find her music writing/photography in She Shreds, Noisey, and FLARE. This is her first year with TNW and she's excited to bring attention to emerging artists.

Yasmin MacKay - Marketing Director

Yasmin MacKay, originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, is a film actress based in Toronto. Her first feature film is currently in post-production. New to the team this year, she brings knowledge from past social media venues and a passion for storytelling to the TNW team.

Tom Kuhn - Social Media Coordinator

Tom Kuhn graduated from the University of Toronto in 2019 with a BA in Cinema Studies and two minors in Drama and History. While there he served in the Cinema Studies Student Union as Treasurer and as co-Programmer of Free Friday Films. He also volunteered as a photographer for the Varsity, U of T's student newspaper.

Shaq Hosein - Board Director

Shaq Hosein is a video producer based in Mississauga. In 2018, he graduated from the University of Toronto with a BA in Cinema Studies and English literature. He served as head of music programming for Toronto New Wave in its first two years and now operates within the Board of Directors.

Emmanuel Teji - Board Director

Emmanuel Teji is a multidisciplinary artist with focuses in film & music. He is currently producing an album titled “Twin Flame”. On top of singing/songwriting, he will also creatively direct the visuals of this project; a fitting task given his 3 years of experience as a film director/producer. Emmanuel is one of the original founders of Toronto New Wave and took on the role of Executive Director in 2018, spearheading the organization. He is now taking a step back to focus on his own endeavours after having played a major role in growing TNW in its 2nd year.

Farah Mannan - Board Director

Farah Mannan is a lifelong movie-lover and freelance artist based in the GTA. After meeting each other at the cinema studies program at the University of Toronto, she and her fellow co-founders welcomed audiences to the first of what would become Toronto New Wave’s annual multimedia arts festival in 2017. Farah has also served as a film programmer for U of T’s weekly Free Friday Film series, hosted by the Cinema Studies Student Union, and hopes to bring her experiences with curating content for live audiences to a fresh & new TNW crowd.

Matt Kim - Board Director

Matt is a director and a computer scientist. He got into the film scene through Raindance on Campus studied Computer Science at University of Toronto, and where he met a future cofounder of Toronto New Wave. Matt has officially been a part of TNW since 2018 as a Board Director.

John Ahn - Visual Designer

Nick Garel-Jones - Graphic Designer

Nick Garel-Jones is a film student at Ryerson University. He joined TNW to support emerging artists in the Toronto arts scene and to be a part of a bigger initiative. Nick is also the VP Design for Ryerson's first art club, the Visual Artists Association, where he assists in running workshops and events to bring more art on campus. In the future, he hopes to work in special fx, motion graphics, and music videos.
